R. Wayne Mezitt is a 3rd generation nurseryman and a Massachusetts Certified Horticulturist, now chairman of Weston Nurseries of Hopkinton and Chelmsford, MA. He has served as president of the Massachusetts Nursery and Landscape Association(1976-78), the New England Nursery Association, (1984) and the American Horticulture Industry Association (“AmericanHort”)(2002-3, when it was the American Nursery and Landscape Association), now based in Columbus, Ohio and Washington, DC. In 2013 he formed “Hort-Sense”, a horticultural advisory business that utilizes his knowledge and experience for client benefit.

Wayne currently represents AmericanHort on the Massachusetts Invasive Plant Advisory Group (MIPAG), where he serves as Chairman; he is a past Chairman and currently serves as a Trustee for the Massachusetts Horticultural Society at Elm Bank, and is an Honorary Trustee since March 2008 of the Tower Hill Botanic Garden/Worcester County Horticultural Society.

Graduated Hopkinton High School in 1960, he earned a BA degree in Economics, Cornell University 1964.  Joined Weston Nurseries, the family business started by his grandfather Peter J. Mezitt, after earning his MBA in finance from Cornell’s Samuel C. Johnson Graduate School of Business in 1966. Married Elizabeth Pickering (Cornell BA 1965) in 1965, 4 children (Peter, Laurel, Cyndy, Brian), 9 grandchildren.

Wayne has been a member of GardenComm (formerly the Garden Writer’s Association) since 1997;he submitted monthly horticultural columns for the MetroWest Daily News from January 2003 through December 2018; a Massachusetts Certified Horticulturist since the program began in 1978;member of the Horticultural Club of Boston, serving as President 1994-1996; past Chairman (1988-92) of Leadership MetroWest,; current member of the Massachusetts Agricultural Club & its President 1998-2000; served as president of the Horticultural Research Institute, 2008; the Marketing Committee Chair since 2005 of Tower Hill Botanic Garden’s Cary Award Program; received the Bronze Medal of the American Rhododendron Society in 1992; honored as Fellow of the International Plant Propagators Society in 2000.
